Writer's unblock
Have you ever wanted to write, but you aren't inspired?
Have you ever stared at a blank page waiting for the perfect line to arrive?
Have you ever had the music but couldn't find the words?
William S. Burroughs developed a workaround in the 1950s with artist Brion Gysin called the "cut up technique."
It's beautifully simple:
Write a paragraph or two about anything.
Describe different subjects, images, feelings.
Create what Bowie later called a "story ingredients list."
Cut the text into pieces:
Four or five words per piece.
Use scissors.
Mix up the pieces.
Shuffle them.
Don't think about it.
Reassemble them in a new order.
And just like that... A new perspective... Writer's unblock.
